Morrowind Review

By Curtis Wright

Many games that say they are RPGs. They have the basic elements of it, character development, NPC's, different items and quests. But few games match the open endness of Elders Scrolls Three: Morrowind. This game is about as open ended as you can get. It has many quests, items, books, and cities.

This game starts out ploping you out in the small town of Seyda Neen. You have been released from an Imperial Prison on the mainland. You are given barely anything and are turned loose. From there, you can do anything you want. You can steal anything you see, you can attack anyone you see, run anywhere, jump on anything, anything.
One of the things that immeaditly strikes you is the music. It's original score sticks in your head. You'll hum it and remember it. The voice acting is O.K. for how little it is actually present. The battle scenes have their own music and the monsters and you make noises when you hit them, sometimes.
Another good things about this game is the incredable depth. There are thousands of books im the game, that are not required to read, but fun to know. Also, there are several guilds that you can join, do quests for and become the head of. Some fo the guilds are: Fighters, Mages, Theives, Assassins, Hllalu(beurocrats) and Blades(CIA). There are also thousands upon thousands of weapons, items, armor, rings and clothes. It is impossible to say how many items there are becuase you can enchant your own items. As a mage, you can make your own spells. It is very deep.

The story is slow to pick up, but strong none the less. It is long, but you can can see it coming from a long way off. It involves lots of walking around. The game world is huge. It would take a long time to go from one side to the other. There are lots of hidden temples, dungeons and shacks. They all have some unique itmes there. There are lots of secrets about this world that you really have to investigate to figure out. You can skim the top, or you can go deep. The game is even furthered by the fact that it comes with its own construction set, allowing you to create a whole new game. It is totally accesible and easy to use. If you got onto the internet, many people have posted some of their mods. Morrowind Summit

As you can see, the graphics are ok, but what reall makes this all ok is that the frame rates are very good. The load times for PC are good as well. On Xbox, they suck.
All this good stuff is not with out it's bad things. The AI in this game is very poor. They have lots of things to talk about, but it is totally text. You must read what they say. Also, lots of the NPCs look and act the same. Another bad thing is the story. It's story is very easy to loose track of. But, that is what you sacrifice for an open ended game. One thing that makes you loose interest later on is that the game gets too easy. Yes, putting the smack down of people is fun, but eventually, it gets redundant. The people don't advance with you. You eventually get retartedly good, and can't be touched. Also, there is no place to put your stuff. If you put your stuff in a box, it will stay there, but you can easily forget what box it is in. This is easily reconsiled by downloading a mod for the PC.

Pros:

  • Big
  • Immense Depth
  • Awesome Music

Cons:
  • Bland AI
  • Non Prominant Story
  • Gets Too Easy
  • No Home Base

Final Score:
9.0/10
